| The History of Thai Bodywork |
Thai Therapy originated in India (not Thailand) and the practices of Yoga, influenced by Buddhism, Ayurvedic and Chinese medicines. Indian physician Jivaka Kumar Bhaccha is believed to be the founder of this ancient and sacred medicine. He was a contemporary of Buddha and is mentioned by name in the ancient scriptures of Buddhism. Indian medicine and Buddhism reached Thailand around the 2nd or 3rd centuries B.C. and was passed down orally from teacher to student until today. Thai massage is one of the four main branches of Thai medicine. The other three branches are diet, herbal medicine and spiritual practice.
Thai Yoga Therapy is based on the principals of energy and the running of energy lines in the body. It aims to stimulate the flow of energy within the body by opening the places of constriction and bring into balance both the physical systems and energetic field of the human body.
