Craniosacral work was originally developed from Osteopathy by Dr. William Sutherland O.M.D. around the turn of the 20th century. Based on his study of the mechanics of articular mechanisms in the living human body and what he learned from his patients, Dr Sutherland developed Cranial-Osteopathy.
After discovering subtle rhythms of movements in the bones of the head, Dr. Sutherland found that these rhythms or tides are intrinsic to the entire body. He discovered that the degree of ease within tides is reflective of the ease or constriction in the connective tissue of the body. That ease or constriction directly relates to the degree of the physical, emotional and psychological health of a person. Dr. Sutherland recognized the natural powers within his patients which can resolve problems and heal strains.
Dr. Sutherland?s research also uncovered that the craniosacral practitioners ability to attune to and flow with these gentle tides can unwind restrictions in the fascial tissue, freeing the bones, muscles and organs and facilitating the body's innate healing force.
